to improve image quality. Why are the web pages not showing
better quality pictures?
1. How does accelerated dial-up work?
Accelerated dial-up instantly compresses the data you are
downloading from the internet, so that it loads faster onto your
computer saving you time and money.
The service works by vastly reducing the amount of data being
transmitted through a dial-up line to 'shrink' it so that it
loads faster. The latest optimisation technology minimises
transfer time and bandwidth needs when downloading websites. To
do this, the technology incorporates advanced techniques of:
• Format reduction - to improve the
efficiency of web languages such as HTML, JavaScript and CSS
• Data compression - to apply general
compression to regular text and specific compression to images,
multimedia and certain document types
• Caching - before spending valuable resources
on optimising web pages which have already been viewed, the
technology checks to see if it already has an up-to-date copy of
the requested content
This unique optimisation ensures a faster dial-up experience
for accelerated dial-up users.
2. Will accelerated dial-up work with my internet
connection?
Accelerated dial-up works with any dial-up Internet connection.
Simply click here to get started.
3. How much faster will my dial-up connection be?
Speeds are typically up to five times as fast.
4. Will Accelerated dial-up change how I view web
pages?
No – Accelerated dial-up works by compressing images and files
so that they are optimised on your screen ensuring that you
still view the same information as with a normal connection.
5. Why should I choose the clientless version?
The clientless version of accelerated dial-up provides improved
web browsing due to caching, compression and optimisation of
graphics. All optimisation occurs automatically to provide you
with an easy to use solution which works 'behind the scenes' to
ensure a faster browsing experience every time you dial-up.
6. What operating systems does Accelerated dial-up
(Clientless) work on?
The service works on all Windows operating systems. Please note
that you will need to be using Windows 98 Internet Explorer
Version 5 or higher.
7. Why should I choose the client version?
In addition to the standard optimisation tools, the client
version also compresses downloaded files, POP3 email and
attachments. You can also choose to compress web graphics and
emails according to your own requirements.
8. What operating systems does Accelerated dial-up
(Client) work on?
The service can be installed on Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.
Windows 95 and NT are not supported. Please note that you will
need to be using Windows 98 Internet Explorer Version 5 or
higher. The service is not compatible with Mac operating
systems.
9. How much does it cost?
Unlike other UK providers, we do not charge a set up or monthly
fee for this service. The only costs incurred are your usual
0845 charges.
10. How do I change my dial-up number?
Simply access the properties of your dial-up connection (under
your Control Panel or My Computer depending on the operating
system you are using) and change the 0845 number you are
currently dialling to.
11. How do I change the quality at which my images
are downloaded?
This can be done on the client version only. Open the client.
Under the settings menu you will see a sliding scale. Simply
drag the slider up and down to select the connection speed of
Accelerated dial-up. The relevant image quality which you will
achieve is displayed at the bottom of the settings screen, under
the scale, and will be shown in the two pictures to the right of
the scale. Finally click the Apply button to save your choice.
12. Can I set a rule to exclude some websites from
optimisation?
Accelerated dial-up can be set to exclude various IP addresses
from optimising any graphics to ensure that you always view
pictures at the quality intended. This can be done on the client
version only, and you will need to know the IP addresses of the
websites you would to exclude. Open the client and select
Options/Advanced. Then select Addresses/Tab/Custom. Click New
and enter a name or reference for the website, followed by the
IP address and address mask.
13. I’ve changed the settings on my client version to
improve image quality. Why are the web pages not showing better
quality pictures?
The web pages you have already downloaded will not auto-refresh.
You will need to clear the cache and refresh the page by
pressing down the CTRL and F5 keys simultaneously.
